Happy New Year: WAKE UP in 2018

Wake up. These are two very powerful words one of my mentors would say at the beginning of each of his talks. What does “wake up” mean to you? There’s a big movement around mindfulness right now, but many people may not understand what it’s truly about. Most people are so busy in their lives, over-scheduled, over-loaded, over-stimulated, that they are not truly connected to reality. There so wrapped in an illusion about what is going on around them, that they can’t make truly grounded decisions. They’re constantly reacting instead of acting. From my perspective, waking up is a process of truly being conscious and in the moment as often as possible. It’s being truly connected to someone else. Listening …

An Unexpected Source of Wisdom

When was the last time you challenged your vantage point or position on something? Before you answer too quickly, ask yourself this: To what level did you challenge yourself? One of my mentors gave me a great lesson—wisdom comes from multiple perspectives. In fact, when I launched into a study on spirituality and consciousness years ago, he recommended some crazy, whacky, off the wall and weird sh%$! After diving into the books, I asked him, “You don’t believe all this… do you?” He answered, “No.” Yet, he quickly pointed out that in order to go deeper with my own understanding, my perspective needed to be exposed to alternate possibilities. Further, he shared a radical idea with me. He asked about …

Without This You Will Always Be Mediocre

As a tenured Martial Artist, people are often fascinated by how I have been studying consistently for nearly 30 years. Truth be told, this hasn’t been all that difficult for me. Neither has working out on a regular basis nor making conscious decisions around what foods I put into my body. On a professional level, I have been working out of a home office ever since I got my first job 25 years ago. When this comes up in conversation, I invariably come across people who tell me how they “could never do that.” When I ask them why not, the answer is something like, “I would not get anything done.” Or, “I can’t discipline myself to do that.” My …

Is Your Vision Mapped Correctly? Or Will You Take Your Dreams to the Grave?

Do you have a clearly defined vision for your life? Here is one of my favorite excerpts from Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll: Alice: “Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?” The Cheshire Cat: “That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.” Alice: “I don’t much care where –” The Cheshire Cat: “Then it doesn’t matter which way you go.” Over the last year, I have been asking a lot of CEOs and Business Leaders if their company has a written vision. Most said yes, yet when I asked if they have a written vision around their PERSONAL life that clearly depicts the IDEAL in all areas of life, …

Is Executive Coaching For You?

There are many people who call themselves coaches or Executive coaches and a great variance in the philosophies of what that actually means. Many successful people, from celebrities and Fortune 500 CEOs to start up CEOs, hire someone to help them but with what specifically? Here’s my philosophy. You get one life comprised of a profession, a business and everything else. Your health and wellness, relationships, experiences, home environment and whatever else is in your grand picture. If you step out of the box and look at all of that from the outside, what is it that you want to get from your life? If you could fast forward and go out to the end, in your final years when …
